This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In our behavioral classroom for middle school special education students, we recognize the profound impact that stories can have on teaching empathy and resilience. This grant seeks to provide a curated collection of literature specifically selected to resonate with our students’ unique experiences and challenges. The books will include narratives that illustrate themes of compassion, overcoming adversity, and understanding differing perspectives. By engaging with these stories, students will not only improve their reading skills but also learn valuable social skills and emotional regulation strategies, enabling them to navigate their feelings and relationships more effectively.

Our primary goal for this project is to foster a supportive environment where students can explore social emotional learning through literature.

We aim to create structured reading sessions that encourage discussion, reflection, and collaboration among peers. Through guided activities and discussions surrounding the stories, students will practice empathy by stepping into the shoes of diverse characters and reflecting on their experiences. By the end of this project, we hope to see increased emotional awareness and improved social interactions among students, ultimately helping them develop the resilience needed to face challenges both inside and outside the classroom.

What makes our students special is their incredible potential and creativity, despite the obstacles they face. Many have experienced difficulties with emotional regulation and communication, but they possess a strong desire to learn and connect with others. By providing them with access to literature that speaks to their lived experiences, we empower them to express themselves, build meaningful relationships, and cultivate resilience. This project will not only enrich their educational experience but will also contribute to their growth as empathetic, compassionate individuals ready to thrive in their communities.
