This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The Roman orator Cicero once said, "A room without books is like a body without a soul." Recently, I posted a project on Donors Choose requesting books to start a classroom library. The response was miraculous and had an inspiring effect on my students. The excitement of tearing open packages and seeing books on topics they had expressed an interest in or stories they wanted to read built a desire to explore the written word.
Books provide English language learners a chance to discovery the world guided by their own curiosity and imagination.
Books have fired up the their enthusiasm to read and learn new things. Students have been asking me questions like "Miss, can we learn about rocks?", "Miss, can I read a manga book?", "Miss, can I take a picture of this recipe? I want to try making it when I get home?"
My students are sixth, seventh, and eighth grade English language learners. Most of my students come from Spanish speaking households but our class also includes students whose home languages are Arabic and Punjabi. They have primarily grown up in the United States which means the majority of their educational experience has been in English.
My Project
Books are both a window into our world and a portal to other worlds. I learned as a child that in the pages of a book I could do anything or be anyone. I want my students to be able to experience the same freedom that I did when they read. When I first told my students that we would have library time in our class they were skeptical. In the last few weeks, I have watched as my students have grown in confidence and are taking the lead in finding their own reading material.
When they learn something new or connect with a character, the excitement radiates off their faces and shines in their eyes.
Many of the books included in this project are the direct result of students asking to learn about a subject or if they could read a particular genre. Being able to provide their input on what books are included in our class library gives the students ownership and helps them have a voice. The biographies of individuals like Maria Tallchief, Roberto Clemente, and Louis Braille provide the stories of heroes from our past while books like the Marvel and DC Encyclopedias show how we can create our own heroes.
