Curious, eager, and full of life; these are all characteristics that come to mind when I reflect on the little second graders in my class this year. These kids want to know everything about the world around them. They pour over books, soak up information from educational videos, and listen intently to instruction about new things.
My second graders have a hunger for knowledge and deserve to have the highest quality resources at their fingertips, opening the doors to a brighter future for not only themselves, but their families as well.
My Project
Like most teachers, I can't be in 10 places at once. As much as I'd like to be able to read with every student one-on-one every day, it just isn't feasible. I can, however, provide them with mp3 players and audiobooks as listening centers so those who struggle to read independently can get the support they need while I'm working with another group that needs my attention.
These headphones, mp3 players, and audiobooks would not only give my English Language Learners increased exposure to native English speakers and texts, but will also help meet the needs of many of my students who came to me more than a grade-level behind in their literacy skills.
