I teach Kindergarten at P.S. 185, located on 112th Street in West Harlem, New York. P.S 185 is a small community based school, which accommodates children in Pre-K through 2nd grade. 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.I currently teach twenty Afro-American and Hispanic students. This year, our school is involved in a project called "Emergent Reading". It is a way of introducing our littlest readers to the world of story telling and reading of literature. As their teacher, I read aloud the same story books, such as Corduroy, Peter's Chair, and Chrysanthemum to them daily, just as a bedtime story. Case studies have shown that children who hear their favorite stories read to them over and over again become so familiar with them that they too, begin to read the books as though they are readers. They internalize the role of the experienced reader and attempt to read the stories on their own. They internalize the language of the books and incorporate aspects of it into their play and their everyday talk. Children move from telling stories in oral language structures to forming them in written language structures. Many children in my school lack this experience in their homes. However, these books cost much more money than can be alloted at this time. In order for this project to be successful, the classroom needs multiple copies of each book, so that all children can participate in reading at the same time. As a teacher of five-year olds, there is nothing more exciting than listening to them read from picture books as though they are fluent readers. Please consider this proposal. Children through repeated rereading use their current knowledge of the world, language, and literacy to reconstruct the text for themselves. They begin to make connections between print, pictures and an audience, which are so critical to becoming life long readers and learners. Thank you!
