I need the National School Library Standards for Learners and a selection of "stories to solve" for my students so that I can connect current inquiry-based research projects with traditional and compelling storytelling.
My students love their small, rural, peninsular school and the community that supports it. In our library, students are excited to connect to the greater world through books, stories, information, and technology.
I love that they see the library as a place for dreaming and learning and I am continually in awe of their tenacity for finding answers.
While each student at our school has unique interests, challenges and needs, they all find their home in the library. I feel lucky to be the one who helps guide them towards the information or answers they seek.
My Project
This project will support me as I create units that align with the new American Association of School Librarians Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries while at the same time cultivating students' love for traditional, global stories.
The new standards focus on inquiry, engagement, exploration, curation, collaboration and inclusion; "solvable" stories are an engaging way to pique kids' curiosity.
I will use the standards and stories together to inspire students to stretch their thinking and grow as learners.
Students will have an opportunity to read, research, and explore according to their own interests, using both print resources and online databases.
