it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are INCREDIBLE multi-lingual learners in a Dual Language program (English and Spanish). For our unit on "tell your own story, mirrors and windows" I want students to learn folktales and knowledge from Native and Indigenous authors to connect to our Since Time Immemorial learning on Native history past and present. We will use these teachings from these incredible books and authors to connect to the land and important knowledge told through stories which will support our learning in Science and conservation. I also want to learn together through stories and authors from their own diverse home cultures. Mirrors are to feel validated in our own identities and seeing ourselves and our families in the books we read and windows/sliding doors allow us to hear and feel stories from other cultures in our classroom and around the world. I also want us to critically analyze sexism and racism in certain fairytales and how important it is to hear people's stories in their own voices from their own culture. The students will finish it all off with writing their own story with an important moral or teaching to them or re-telling one from their families/culture.
