This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are busy bees that will sting if not constantly engaged. I teach in a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade special education classroom in an urban setting with high poverty. My current group must be constantly engaged or inappropriate behaviors are quickly exhibited.
Each student has their own set of books, at their level. Those books are currently housed in a plastic Ziploc bag that sits in a basket. This causes multiple problems. First, the students little fingers don’t' have the ability to zip and unzip the bags so they often are ripped in a couple days.
Secondly, the students have to wait too long as the students dig through the baskets looking for their Ziploc bag. This usually takes awhile, especially since many times the marker has wiped off the bag. Third, these students like to be busy and when they can't get their books and get right to work there are often behavior issues during the book getting transition. If I pass out the book bags the students are still sitting without engagement for too long of a period and they are not gaining the independence they are capable of.
My students need individual book bins that are durable and reusable. These bins would be placed on a shelf and clearly visible to the students. The students would be able to simultaneously gather their books and sit down without hesitation or disruption. This would lead to fewer altercations between students and more time and opportunity for reading.
You will be providing my special education classroom with a resource that allows them to access their materials independently, reduce classroom interruptions, and most importantly increase reading opportunities.
