My Students
Everything I needed to learn, I learned in Kindergarten. I never understood how true that really is until recently, when I started teaching Kindergarten! Kindergarten is the learning foundation, the building block for all learning. ABC's and 123's start the learning.
I teach kindergarten at a school where children are haunted every day by the terrors of their past, be it Hurricane Katrina of 2005 or the crime and turmoil they see and hear everyday.
Our students are fighters. They work hard to achieve goals that others may think are too much for them, and they strive to do the right things in life and to be the change our society needs. Almost all of our students receive free lunch due to poverty.
The children in kindergarten this coming year, were born just after Hurricane Katrina. They are fresh, eager minds. All they've seen in their short lives so far is turmoil and devastation; it's my job to make them accomplished learners! As an added challenge, our school is moving for the second time in two years. We are strong, we are resilient, we will bounce back, but we need help from you!
My Project
Our classroom has been blessed by several generous donors who have donated hundreds of dollars to ensure my students have the proper reading material. Now, we're hitting another road block. Since our school is once again moving, space will be another problem for us. Although our new classrooms are spacious, we're lacking bookshelves and built-ins to store our materials. To facilitate my guided reading groups and centers properly, we need a safe place to store all of our guided reading books so that we can work efficiently, the mobile book cart is perfect for storing our books.
We also need a few small things to help us throughout our lessons so that the students can manipulate and visualize the text in the books. Wikki Stix and Highlighter tape would allow them to do just that! Being able to make the words out of the sticks, underline and highlight letters and words, even make circles around words... there are so many things we can do with highlighter tape and Wikki Stix!
Reading is essential in kindergarten.
