English learners at our school make up the entirety of my classroom. Though not exclusively, the vast majority are living in poverty. Everything they do is hard: language, school, and sometimes just even getting up in the morning.
The youth who make it to my room have various levels of education.
But they do have one important commonality: They are living in a community that is outside the mainstream English-speaking community. Many have left everything they knew before, including their homes, friends, and security. And one thing is certain: We need to meet them where they are.
My Project
We started a garden club this year to get kids outside and to teach them about nutrition and the science of growing things, especially after Covid kept them inside. After starting a few beds just to get us off the ground, we combed the internet for tool and plant donations, but now those tools are all sitting out in the rain behind the school because we've got no place to store them inside.
A shed will help students learn how to organize and secure their tools for the winter months.
They can take a leading role in assembling the shed, determine placement in the yard and give us a place to store our painting paraphernalia when we start the spring mural project on the fence and plant our pollinator patch. This is all about student voice and choice.
