I am a fifth grade math teacher at Village Academy Charter School in Harlem. My school serves randomly selected students from the Harlem public schools in New York City. I enjoy getting students excited about learning math facts that, in reality, must simply be memorized. Everybody remembers having to memorize their times tables when they were growing up; this is often a painful task, as rote memorization is not fun for anyone, especially when you are ten years old and want to be outside having fun. I have had a great deal of success in the past with motivating students to memorize facts such as this in much less painful ways than rote memorization. This involves students completing various activities while being timed. Children get very excited when they see their times getting faster on a daily-basis. In the past, I have done my best to keep times on a single stopwatch. This often leads to many students waiting to be timed, however, which is a loss of valuable learning time. I would like a classroom set of 35 stopwatches so that I may have students time themselves and each other during these activities. This will allow for a maximization of learning time for all students during the multiple math classes that I teach and an improvement in math knowledge and math scores. Thank you for your consideration.
