Summer is a wonderful time! It's time for family vacations, trips to the pool, lazy days in the sun, and much more. What we sometimes forget about is how much educational ground our students can lose during the three-month break from school, particularly when it comes to reading.
We are a Title I elementary school in a rural area of NC.
There are almost 400 students in our school in grades K-5. Many of my students do not have basic necessities at home so we strive, as a school, to open their worlds to new opportunities. Despite all the challenges they face our students are hard workers and excited to learn.
My Project
We are requesting a subscription to Speakaboos. Speakaboos brings classic children's entertainment into a digital world. Beloved characters and treasured stories are given new life through amazing celebrity performances, beautiful illustrations, and original music. At Speakaboos, children develop literacy skills while learning about technology in a safe and fun environment.
This website full of engaging e-books will be used by both teachers and students throughout the school. It will be used for both individual viewing and whole class instruction.
Our students will have access to these stories at school and, more importantly, at home over the summer.
By having access to hundreds of fun and engaging e-books over the summer we can hopefully avoid the "summer slide". Students that do not read over the summer are at risk of losing up to 22% of what they learned the previous year! With your help we can avoid that scary statistic!
