Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a dual language program - some children are learning English and some Spanish. They learn together and help each other along the way. One of the ways we foster language acquisition is through reading. I love that they choose reading as a reward.
We encourage a love of reading and try to find opportunities to reward students with independent reading time.
We want to build a community that looks forward to reading. By funding this project you will help me to give every student a new book to take home of their summer. A book that they get to choose and that they WANT to read.
My Project
Students can lose a grade level of progress over the summer if they don't read. Access to books is the number one reason students don't read over the summer. We want to provide each student with a high interest book to take home and read!
By funding this project, you will be helping young readers to grow and capture the love of reading!
Many children, especially struggling readers, forget some of what they've learned or slip out of practice during the summer months. What is summer slide? Summer slide is the loss of academic skills over summer vacation. A 2007 Johns Hopkins study tracked low-income students making reading progress during the school year revealed that gains made slipped away during the summer months due to unequal access to summer learning opportunities and access to reading materials. During the school year, students have access through school and classroom libraries along with regular checks on reading progress by classroom teachers. Teachers spend much time with individual students, in both small and whole class settings, to hone in on teaching key skills that build up a child’s reading toolbox. These reading skills carry a student forward as they continue building lifelong reading habits throughout their school years and beyond.
