My students need exposure to the art of printmaking. A Blick E-Z Cut Classroom Starter Kit will allow for my students to learn the basics, so they will be able to experience this skilled technique.
My students are creative, passionate, and inspired young adults. Within the walls of my classroom, they are free to express themselves with a vibrancy and connection to their ideas they may not have in other classes. Art allows every type of learner to be heard. Whether it be the creation of a portrait, or a visual representation of song lyrics that hold personal meaning to a student, they are able to experiment and create their own worlds.
Most of my students are from rough areas; small communities outside of town where they don't always have access to the same things as the city kids.
It is my hope that my class provides every student, regardless of their background, race, socio-economic standing, gender, etc. a safe place to be their true selves and be heard.
My Project
Printmaking is a unique art form that allows for higher learning and critical thinking. Most high school art students are used to drawing and painting, but this technique teaching them how to take those skills and elevate them. The use of cutters to engrave an image in reverse will require students to think several steps ahead, which will mean more planning and forethought. Brayers spread ink over a cut surface, allowing for the image to appear as the press is used to adhere the ink to printmaking paper.
In a world where everyone has technology, it is good to take a step back and use our hands to create striking, graphically strong images.
Students will learn how to be more intentional with every mark and cut made on the block, which activates various centers in their brains. How many times do we encourage our students to study older techniques? This is a way to preserve ways to create art that have been used for centuries, and show our students that they are still just a relevant today.
