My Students

I have been teaching for 25 years and every year I get excited to create an atmosphere in my classroom that is welcoming and functional. My fifth graders come to me with lots of energy as well as a mixture of needs and struggles. I try to accommodate their needs as well as possible.

One of the consistent needs I find is the need to help the students to stay organized.

It's interesting to note how much time is lost trying to find items and how much disorganization can cause a distraction for students. I set out to aid students in their pursuit of organization with the ultimate goal of increasing time spent learning.

My Project

Some students struggle greatly with organizing. Since we have new tables as desks this year, my students are struggling keeping their materials in a neat pile on their desks. The books and papers slide across and eliminate workspace for them. They also have little room to complete hands-on activities due to their books and supplies being on the table. If we put materials on the floor, they spread out there making it difficult to walk by as well as hard for the students to retrieve items they need. I am excited to add these baskets as a solution to this problem. The baskets will allow the students to maximize their workspace and help them to stay organized.
