it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Throughout the school year, I have seen some of the books I have listed truly change the feelings students have towards reading. The books I've added to this project are top picks from the school library, my classroom library, and ones students brought in from home. I'd love to add these top picks to my classroom library, allowing them to touch the lives of future students to come, just like these titles have done with my current group.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, many having been faced with adversity in which they have sought solace in their peers, in the staff at school, and most importantly- in books.
Reading has become a safe space, when it once felt like a chore to them, which is a huge win and what any ELA teacher could want.
Additionally, we are going into our novel study (The Hunger Games) to finish off the school year, but we currently have only the digital version accessible. Reading a physical copy makes it far easier to truly deep dive into the alternate worlds they're exploring. A class set would help with their engagement and limit distractions as we read through the book.
