My Students
Each day, students begin the morning by getting organized and unloaded. Students sit in groups and begin their morning work. We collaborate from the time that we step into the room.
We are a 5th grade classroom in the capital city of beautiful West Virginia.
There are 21 students in my classroom, but we are supposed to accommodate for as many as 28 students in each room. My students are old enough now that socialization is becoming the center of their world. If that is the case, then why not take advantage of it! They really enjoy working in groups and problem-solving with others rather than just by themselves.
My Project
Currently students are in groups, but they each have their own desks. By having tables, it makes students feel as though they are more a part of a group. They are required to work as a team instead of hiding behind their own desk. Some students excel at this while others need more social interaction. Cooperation and collaboration is an important life-long skill that students need in order to be college and career ready for the 21st Century.
The desks that we have now are all different sizes and made of different materials.
By providing tables, I will be able to de-clutter some of the room and give students more space for learning. A clean and clutter-free classroom does wonders for our little creative minds.
