The use of headphones is necessary every day in my Modern Classroom, but my school does not supply them. I purchased $150 of earbuds at the beginning of the year, but they are cheaply made and I have been throwing away 1-3 pairs per day.
In order to make blended, self-paced, mastery-based learning possible, students need good-quality headphones.
Rather than serving as the gate-keeper to new mathematical knowledge, I use my own teacher-created videos with embedded guided notes, interactive questions, and activities to deliver instruction. Students have access to the content online 24/7 and only move on to the next task when they demonstrate mastery of the content. Students are supported with individual and small group instruction as they work through the content at their own pace. In this way, I successfully move from the sage on the stage to the guide on the side.
While it may seem like a ubiquitous tool, giving students access to good headphones enables this entire pedagogical shift to occur and allows each student to be appropriately challenged every class period.
