I currently teach 4 different classes during 6 different class periods, grades 7 and 8. I am at a new Magnet school and new to teaching Geography and 8th grade U.S. History, so I'm concentrating on creative and exciting lessons. I'm still learning how my new students differ from what I'm used to and I can see an increase in academic motivation and to try new things. Parents are also so supportive, but financially not all can provide everything their child may need to reach such academic heights that can be possible with donor support.
With this in mind, I want to support my students in new and creative ways.
This includes ensuring better classroom management, more and better reading books, project supplies, and awards/incentives to encourage more overall success.
In addition, California is facing unprecedented budget cuts, especially in education. Our school is in a poor neighborhood. Many of my students have parents who did not complete high school or even middle school. Our students face many challenges, including gangs, violence, and poverty. I am amazed by my students' perseverance and resilience.
My Project
My project includes a sound meter that visually shows students how loud the classroom is according to a stop light called a "Yacker Tracker Noise Monitor." My 8th grade students especially have a problem understanding how loud they are and how it is not an "inside voice" that they are using. I'd like to then encourage their noise levels to stay where appropriate according to the lesson (quiet during an assessment, low noise during easy discussions, and medium noise levels during more transitions or movement) with the use of incentives, such as awards. So, my project also includes awards so I'm not always focusing on the fact that they are too loud, but to reward them when the noise level is appropriate.
