This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Experiencing other cultures can help boost creativity and empathy. My students lack the ability to travel first hand and need to see the world through literature.

My students do not have the opportunities to travel the world and experience other cultures and communities.

Research shows that through exposure to a variety of cultures, students are able to better understand and appreciate the differences between people. This leads to increased compassion and decreased bullying.

My Project

I am requesting the book, Bullying in Schools, along with a class set of Esperanza Rising, to develop a unit around building social acceptance and developing empathetic leaders in our school community. The novel examines a wealthy girl from Mexico's life changing experience when she is forced to leave her ranch in Mexico to become a migrant worker in California's Central Valley. The novel touches on issues of prejudice, discrimination, and social justice. Students will be given the opportunity to learn about another culture while using the lens of multiple perspectives.

Simply telling students to be empathetic is not realistic.

As educators, it is our job to expose them to the world outside our classroom and show them the struggles of other communities and the richness of other cultures. By expanding their scope of understanding, they will become more compassionate, global citizens and will possess the knowledge and skills to make a difference in their communities.
