My students need books about bullying in schools as well as board games to help them learn to work together.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Stop, Walk, Talk!" When asked how my students can deal with a bully, they have a variety of strategies to help them in their daily life. Hopefully in an actual situation, they remember some of these strategies we practice within the classroom.
My 5th grade Title I students are from a low income area of Southern California.
Over 95% of the students at our school of almost 1000 students qualify for the free lunch program. The majority of my students do not speak English as a first language and it can at times be difficult to communicate with parents in the traditional ways since they do not read English and I must have everything translated before it is sent home or before I have a translator call home.
My Project
The books, Bullying in Schools from Townsend Press, will be used in my classroom during the week long unit we teach in my school district about bully prevention and strategies to help students deal with the students they encounter that are bullies on our campus or in their neighborhood. Bullying in Schools will give the students real life examples of what happens when someone is being bullied and the ways to help them avoid bullies or deal with a situation if it happens.
In addition to the books, I would like to provide some opportunities for my students to learn to work together in cooperative groups in the classroom. All of the board games and puzzles I have put in my project are to help them work together to read the directions, play the game and work together on teams to complete the tasks. By learning to work together, I hope this helps to strengthen their communication skills and interpersonal relationships.
With the addition of Bullying in Schools from Townsend Press and the board games, I am hoping to add resources to my classroom for the topic of bullying.
Overall, I want students to learn strategies to help them out on the playground and after school when they encounter bullies. This is a lifelong skill they need. Thank you for considering my project.
