This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine a classroom filled with curious , enthusiastic, and global minded first graders eager to learn and read. In our dual language classroom my students are immersed in the Spanish language. My students spend half of the day in Spanish and the other half in English. In total I have 44 students and half of them speak mostly English at home. Yet, they come into my classroom eager and ready to learn Spanish.
It is truly wonderful to see students, whose first language is English, that are able to read, speak and write in a second language.
I help my students understand the importance of their bilingualism and biliteracy. It amazes me how much their young minds are able to grow in just a few months. They are becoming lifelong readers in Spanish!
My Project
My first grade dual language students are in need of high quality MP3 players to listen to their favorite books in Spanish. We are currently using outdated cassette players with a very limited number of cassette tapes. With MP3 players my students will be able to listen to an abundance of books read aloud digitally. They will be able to revisit books read aloud in the class and will have the opportunity to listen to their most loved Spanish books .
My students will have the opportunity to listen to their teachers, classmates, and parents read their most cherished Spanish books.
Our first grade students' goal is to become proficient listeners and speakers in Spanish and English. Through read alouds students are able to listen to a book read fluently. Soon, the next time that a student picks up that same book they will try to read it fluently too . Read alouds help students build metacognitive skills. By actively listening they will listen to the reader model how to think about their thinking . They will also be immersed in the Spanish language and learn new vocabulary through every turn of the page.
Children love to have books read to them, and I want every student to leave my classroom eager to read. They will be very excited to hear books read by their classmates, teachers, and parents. Let's build a love for learning and literacy through listening to books!
