My 8th grade history class is a safe place to learn and grow. We work on basic skills that will benefit my students for the rest of their lives.
Many of my students are being raised in single family households or by grandparents, so their home lives are not always the most stable.
My students are from a high poverty/low-income area, and therefore struggle with many things both inside and outside of school. Our district is 85% free and reduced lunch and 95% at risk to not graduate. They struggle with sitting in a classroom for to long and need outlets for their movement.
My Project
Students are using standing desks daily to help them in some cases stay awake, but in most cases, focus on their daily work. These stools will allow more students to use the standing desks they stand to work right now, and this would let them occasionally sit and rest their legs.
Many students in my school have trouble focusing and standing helps some of them.
However, adding additional stools this project will allow more students to be able to use the desks, even if the student doesn't need to stand.
Some students need help staying awake in class, these students would also benefit from the project, because they could stand until they felt awake enough to continue sitting.
Many of my students were affected by Hurricane Harvey, and they are now displaced or living in homes under construction. School is their safe place that is constant, and this would reduce their stress by letting them move and stand without getting into trouble.
