Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of our students and families are struggling with homelessness, hunger, violence and inconsistent home support. We are a Title I school. We serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The art room is a safe and inclusive place for creative expression.

My 240 middle schoolers have little to nothing of formal visual arts education. Sixty of my students have special needs. These students attend their classes in a variety of settings. Depending on their needs, they attend my class with para professionals or attend independently. Those sixty students are spread out throughout the six periods during the day.

Once in art class they have access to the tools and supplies in the art room. Art develops fine motor and problem solving skills. Art enhances communication and expression.

Art promotes self-esteem and motivation to succeed.

My Project

For most of my students, this is the first time they have taken art in an art classroom.

Unfortunately, the classroom furniture was salvaged from other former non-art classrooms.

What kind of message does that send to these burgeoning middle school art students?

To foster a creative environment, the art room should look and feel different than a standard english or math classroom. These stools allow students to have correct posture and also allow students to push them under tables and have room to stand up and create!

This drive will help give my classroom a complete set of artists' stools.
