I can describe every fifth grader that I teach with one word: unique! From favorite foods to colors, preferred games to books, sports to dance, etc. Every student is profoundly and wonderfully different. Our fifth graders are full of energy, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn. When students come to school, they excel when they are provided with a comfortable, peaceful and collaborative environment in which to learn!
My students are not only intellectual but also social and emotional beings, and all these dimensions interact to impact learning and performance!
When children have a comfortable, safe, fun place to sit, we maximize learning opportunities and minimize redirection. Teaching social skills is a bit like being a counselor. Therefore, I want to provide a space that is comfortable and inviting so that students feel safe when talking about personal issues, learning core curriculum or socializing with their peers. Students are in my classroom for longer periods of time than they are at home. Our environment should be one that is relaxing, peaceful and comfortable! I think the futon and other flexible spaces create a sense of informality and allows the students to feel just that!
These new stools will provide my students an alternative seating option to go with our new counter height bench desk that was specially built for our classroom!
