I reach over 900 students, ages 5-13 (K-8), in a typical week of dance instruction, and they love the use of technology and being able to see themselves dance- whether an audience, or performer (formal or informal) they love to see dance take place! A typical day in my classroom involves 5 small groups of student centered activities where (typical class size of 30) students are involved in small group work and the process of creating dance. Many activities involve students collaborating in small groups to develop their own choreography or practicing and rehearsing specific steps already learned. I scaffold amongst them and love to have the technology so they and I can document their creativity and process of DANCE!
My Project
The Chicago Human Rhythm Project will provide Master Dance Classes for each grade level, of specific genres: Spanish, Inidan, and Tap performed by professional dance artists living and practicing in the Chicago area. My students’ dance experience will be enhanced by being a part of the master class while learning dances of another cultures or specific genre. After the master classes, all students will gather into the auditorium for a student-body assembly where they get to see each dance performed by the dancing artist.
Students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades will be empowered, that “everybody” has a rhythm; breathing and moving, and will expand their dance knowledge and vocabulary through the workshop and performances of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project.
