Every morning we make our way up three flights of stairs and by the time we get in front of our classroom we are somewhat exhausted, nevertheless we always find the strength to greet each other with a warm hello and a big smile. My biggest goal for my students is to have them be more independent.
I had the privilege of teaching the best group of 3rd graders.
They are extra special to me because I have had them since 1st grade, and recently found out that I will have the privilege of being their teacher again in fourth grade. They are eager to learn, respectful, very talkative, humorous, and at times have a little more energy than I would like, but all in all I wouldn't trade them for any other. These are my children! We belong to a school in Brownsville, Brooklyn. This neighborhood has been deemed one of the worst areas in Brooklyn. It possesses all of the qualities that come with poverty: high crime rate, gang violence, failing schools, limited services, excessive murders, etc. My school is specifically looking at each individual child and trying to find an approach that works best for them. in addition to building academic excellence we are building social experiences. Every year students have the opportunity to go camping for three days with staff, and it's simply amazing!
My Project
Technology in the fourth grade classroom can introduce a rich, entertaining range of learning opportunities that engage young minds and get them excited about all aspects of the curriculum. My students will use the iPads to enhance their understanding in all academic subjects, especially reading, science, social studies and math. In fourth grade the students will be building on essential reading skills, learning the mechanics of essay writing, and exploring new concepts in math and science. While using technology is no substitute for mastering the multiplication tables or conducting research for a science project, it's an important tool to supplement classroom instruction. We will use the iPads to research our social studies unit on the Native Americans and the Revolutionary War, remedial and enrichment math centers, vocabulary enhancement, online reading, etc. Having the iPads will also foster independence by allowing the students to retrieve information independently.
If my project is funded, my students will be able to enhance their academic understanding in all subject areas.
If kids have the opportunity to use technology, the opportunities and knowledge that will be acquired are countless! Being that my students through no fault of their own were born into poverty, there are experiences that ordinarily they might not experience. Technology in itself can take kids on imaginable adventures and help find solutions to the many queries that they might have.
