Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our classroom, we go through easel pads, pencils, glue sticks, erasers, and markers faster than you’d expect. My students are eager to learn, create, and participate in every activity, but without enough supplies, sometimes our routines can turn into a traffic jam. I had few students last year who were fortunate enough to still have a bit of glue stick left towards the middle of the school year. If you can imagine, this bit of glorious glue stick quickly became like precious gold as more and more students reached the bottom of their plastic tube. We take kindness pretty seriously in my classroom and some students were kind enough to share. However, reality always seemed to sink into these proud teacher moments. The reality was that this was loss of instructional time.
When students are worried about not having the supplies they need, their focus shifts from learning to managing—managing without a pencil, stretching out the last bit of glue, or waiting to borrow a marker.
These are small distractions that add up quickly. I want my students to have what they need from day one to feel confident, capable, and ready to learn.
In addition to replenishing our basic classroom supplies, I’m also hoping to expand our classroom library with Spanish-language books. Many of my students are bilingual or learning Spanish, and having books that reflect their language and culture is just as important as having enough glue sticks. These books will not only support literacy and language development but also create a classroom environment where every child feels seen and valued.
