My students look and talk like their general education peers. But, they have secrets. Most of them have experienced childhood trauma or may currently be experiencing some type of trauma outside of school. They are learning how to manage their emotions and behaviors in order to gain independence and grow stronger.
Because of our mission and our unique population of children and adolescents, students are frequently coming and going.
We currently have a high school student body of approximately 22 boys and 6 girls. My students are from varying cultures and backgrounds, including but not limited to: Samoan, African American, Mexican, Inupiaq, Hawaiian, Athabaskan, Filipino, and Multiethnic.
Our students are diamonds in the rough, waiting to be discovered and polished so they may shine forever. They are those kids who are cast out by other schools and deemed unfit to teach because of their behaviors. However, at our school we prepare them on how to deal with their disabilities and struggles.
In doing so, we can ensure that they are ready to return to their neighborhood school or that they graduate from our school. Our ultimate goal is to strengthen them and build resilience. They are special.
My Project
Boy, as a first year teacher I really underestimated how much these kids need while they're at school. A lot of our kids get the majority of their meals at school, so I find myself feeding them constantly. Since they're high schoolers, they also have the option of drinking coffee on days when they can't seem to keep their heads up. For our kids, we are requesting snacks and warm drinks are often huge motivators to keep them involved in their work and able to participate.
You'll see MP3 players on our list too, which I plan to load up with good music for kids to listen to after they finish their work - for many of our kids, this is a huge motivator and form of positive reinforcement.
We use headphones to listen to music, to participate in online programs, and to cancel out external noise that may disruptive to the students. We're also low on some supplies, like colored paper, and some of our tools like paper cutters and laminators are outdated and cause more waste than final products.
These things help us to provide beautifully designed resources for our kiddos. This project was created to help me restock on things I'm low on and to help me with the cost of food and drinks that I'm already buying to keep these little bellies full.
