My Students
Margaret Mead once said, "ÂNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
My little group of citizens can change the world, but they need your help! Help us develop a love of reading and adventure!
My seventh grade students attend a progressive charter school in Tennessee, but we do not have a school library.
Most of the books my students come in contact with are ones given to them by teachers out of teacher-run classroom libraries.
Most of my students' families are not in an economic position that allows them to purchase books for their children to read. The students often come to me one, two, three or more grade levels behind in reading and have never had the opportunity to find a book they truly enjoy.
That being said, my students are hungry to learn as much as possible, and absolutely love reading. They especially love reading about a good adventure or living vicariously through characters who fight injustice. They get so excited when new books are added to my classroom library, and the ones who are in better economic positions frequently donate books to the library for their classmates to enjoy. They are kind-hearted, generous, and eager to learn.
My Project
I'm requesting a classroom set of Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt and Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. By reading one of my personal favorites, Tuck Everlasting, they will experience the magic of the spring that gives everlasting life. They will learn what can happen when people exploit and abuse a good thing. They will find adventure without leaving the classroom!
In the novel, Among the Hidden, my students will jump into a dystopian setting where the shadow children live in constant fear. They will fight against injustice at the hands of the Population Police. Luke, the main character, will offer them a glimpse at what childhood could be like, and often is like in other parts of the world.
In addition to the fun they will have reading, my students will grow their brains, as we say, and raise their reading levels through investment in these novels. Increased reading ability will help prepare them for success in college and beyond.
There is a boy in my fourth period class who has barely responded to anything we've read all year.
He mostly sits at his desk and gazes outside the window. He rarely completes his classwork, spends many hours with a reading specialist, and has very little confidence in his academic ability.
Yesterday we began reading The Outsiders, and I couldn't get him to stop talking about it, and I didn't want to. The right book makes all the difference. You can help me give them the right books.
