My seventh grade students attend a progressive charter school in Tennessee, but we do not have a school library. Most of the books my students come in contact with are ones given to them by teachers out of teacher-run classroom libraries. Most of my students' families are not in an economic position that allows them to purchase books for the children to read. The students often come to me one, two, three or more grade levels behind in reading and have never had the opportunity to find a book they truly enjoy. That being said, the students are hungry to learn as much as possible and absolutely love reading. They especially love reading about a good adventure or living vicariously through characters who fight injustice. They get so excited when new books are added to the library, and the ones who are in better economic positions frequently donate books to the library for their classmates to enjoy. They are kind-hearted, generous, and eager to learn.
