Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am fortunate to be working with a creative and energetic group of 10th grade students from Hawthorne, California. We have design pathways for graphic design and architecture. For most students, this is their first encounter with applied arts. They learn that cultivating creative thinking will serve them the rest of their life. For some, they decide that they want to pursue a creative career.
Most of our students come from low income homes and many of them have struggled in a traditional high school environment.
We provide a project based and interdisciplinary curriculum that connects academics to real world issues. Their interest and confidence grows as they are able to apply what they learn to projects that they find relevant.
My Project
I have over 15 years of experience as a graphic designer but am a brand new teacher. I am fortunate to be teaching a great group of kids at a school that has a graphic design pathway. While the program is incredible, the cupboards are bare.
These supplies will enable my students to enjoy a wide range of art experiences.
The paintbrush set, acrylic paint and paint wells will give my students the opportunity to learn color theory. We will mix all the colors of the rainbow from the primary colors. The class set of drawing pencils will give my students the opportunity to draw a still life of their own creation and learn 2 point perspective.
I found a screen printing press in storage that hadn't been used in years. With the screen printing chemicals, fabric ink, and printing paper, students will be able to create and print their own posters and t-shirts. I'd love for students to be able to print shirts for the various teams and clubs at school.
The file folders and boxes will help me keep the student's work organized. We have a portfolio show and review at the end of each semester. It is important for me to hang on to their work for them.
Our goal as a program is to teach students to think creatively and critically. They will learn that art can enrich their life, and if they choose, be a career. Students learn both graphic design and architecture. These supplies will make an unbelievable difference to my students.
