Help me give my students a Singer Sewing Machine so students can design and sew their own costumes for plays and performances, either from scratch or by altering existing garments.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Theater education fosters creativity, collaboration, and technical skills—but our students are currently limited in their ability to contribute to costume and set design due to a lack of essential tools. Costumes and fabric-based set pieces are critical elements of any production, and learning how to design and construct them is a hands-on way for students to take ownership of their theatrical experiences. Currently, we do not have a functioning sewing machine or related supplies. This hinders our ability to teach costume design, basic sewing techniques, and prop construction.
Providing a sewing system—including sewing machines, materials, and basic accessories—will not only enrich our performances but will also offer students real-world skills in design, craftsmanship, and creative problem-solving.
I will introduce basic sewing skills to all theater students over the course of the academic year. Produce student-made costumes and props for at least two full productions annually. Involve students in costume design from concept to execution, reinforcing their understanding of character development and theatrical storytelling. Promote collaboration and teamwork by forming student-led design and construction crews. Develop technical and vocational skills relevant to careers in theater, fashion, or design.
