Stitching History: Empowering Students Through Storytelling and Quilting
Help me give my students an interactive history experience by creating a collaborative quilt. Will use cotton fabric, fleece, blankets, and sewing supplies to explore, storytelling, resistance, and community through hands-on creativity!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are incredible young thinkers who bring diverse perspectives, curiosity, and creativity to every project. They attend school in Westlawn, Chicago, or many face challenges yet showed their resilience and determination in their learning. They are passionate about connecting history to their lives and exploring how past struggles and triumphs inform today’s world.
This project will give my students a hands-on, interactive way to engage with African-American history.
Creating a collaborative quilt, they will learn about storytelling, resistance, and community, key themes, and African-American studies. Each student will design and craft quilt square, expressing their understanding of historical and contemporary issues. Together the squares will form a collective story, reflecting both their individuality and their shared learning journey.
These materials will provide students with the resources they need to explore history creatively, connect with cultural traditions, and gain a deeper understanding of the power of storytelling. The process of designing, sewing, and assembling the quilt will build not only historical knowledge, but also teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Our goal is to help students develop a personal connection history, see the relevance of the past in their lives, and something last seen and meaningful.
