This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In my classroom I teach a highly ambitious group of students. They have found identity and representation, which are highly motivating factors for minority students. Spanish has become more than a language, it has become part of their identity, something to embrace and be proud of. My students have come to value the richness in culture, not only their own, but many others.

I have noticed that my students' choice of clothing often reflects an appreciation for their heritage and culture, so having a sewing machine that can allow my students to create culturally rich artifacts and garments can help them express their pride through artisanal creations of their own making.

Technology enables me to take my students on virtual trips to the Spanish speaking countries around the world. Although I try to simulate cultural experiences to the best of my ability, I want students to have more hands-on interactions.

Tools such as this sewing/embroidery machine will help our class develop artifacts of their own designs. Such hands-on activities will enable my students to take ownership of their learning and apply their knowledge at a creative level.
