Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a group of fun-loving fourth graders who come from low socioeconomic status families in a racially diverse community. They are eager to explore and try new things, despite them not having much opportunity to do so. Many of them are first-generation Americans and are the first in their family to aspire to go to college.
The community rallies around the students to help them succeed.
Many of my students are trying to become first-generation college students. They live in a community where English is their second language. I have students from all over Latin America and Asia. Research has shown that auditory learning is one of the best ways for ESL students to learn English. As they listen, they get to hear pronunciations and speech patterns that will, in turn, help them develop their English language skills.
My Project
BrainPOP is an online tool that allows teachers to access fun videos and standard-based tools to help facilitate student learning. BrainPOP is fully interactive, so I can use it for whole-group learning at the whiteboard or allow students to use it in small-groups with tablets or my laptop. For students who struggle with learning, an interactive tool gives them a chance to get up and move, and receive immediate feedback. Success starts with confidence, and interactive and engaging lessons like those in BrainPOP give students a chance to succeed.
BrainPOP will facilitate learning for my students and help them on their way to meeting their academic needs in a fun and engaging manner.
I envision myself using BrainPOP to introduce units in all subject areas and allowing students to access it during center activities for independent practice. Assessment tools will give me information on how well students understood the lesson and whether or not skills were mastered.
