Still Starving For Art

My students need more art supplies, such as Crayola slick sticks and watercolor paints, as well as storage bins in which to keep our art supplies.

My Students

Math and reading are important. Very important, as a matter of fact and it's clear why the majority of our limited funding goes toward these subjects. But it means we continue to give the shaft to good, old-fashioned, quality art supplies to use for artistic creativity in the classrooms.

I teach third graders.

I love every minute. They are middle-to-upper-class (with a few lower income) students attending a very good school in the foothills of Utah. That's the problem. They live in Utah where funding for education is among the very worst in the country.

My Project

I teach over 100 third graders about famous artists and types of art, from Van Gogh to Georgia O'Keeffe. The students are starving for this type of education because it's new, different, and often forgotten in the midst of our new common core. I want to give them a true taste of how the artists created their masterpieces. This is very difficult to do when art supplies in our school range from construction paper to well, construction paper. Last year some very generous donors expanded our artistic repertoire with oil pastels and chalk. This year I'm hoping to add to that with slick sticks and watercolors, along with some storage space in which to house them (I teach in a portable where there is basically zero storage space. Bins are my new best friend!) With the help of Donors Choose, I hope to be given the means to better provide these third graders with a true artistic education using tools similar to those the great artists use.

I am a true believer in the idea that art can be used to enhance all education - math, science, reading - but I cannot provide this education to my students without all the proper tools.

I want my students to understand that art is more than cutting construction paper and gluing it together to make a picture. They need these experiences! After all, what would the world be without artistic expression? Kind of boring, if you ask me.
