I want my students to be engaged and motivated in the classroom!
My students are a great group of kids from a rural town in Pennsylvania.
Many of them come from food unstable homes and go hungry more than we realize. Paying attention and being engaged and motivated is very hard to do on an empty stomach.
This year, I want students to have a chance to experience creativity and inquiry in the classroom. I want them to see that what they are learning extends beyond the classroom walls and I want them to apply their learning to real-life situations. I want them to wake up in the morning and say, "I can't wait to go to school today!" Providing students with healthy snacks and making sure they don't go hungry is one way to help me reach those goals!
My Project
Our students need healthy snacks to eat throughout the day and to take home at night to help fill their bellies and fuel their brains. Many of our students go without a snack throughout the day and are hungry. In many cases, students may not have even eaten breakfast.
According to Feeding America, "children facing hunger may struggle in school-and beyond." It is very hard for students to concentrate when they're hungry.
We need to replenish our supply of snacks with pretzels, cereal, and Goldfish crackers. These snacks will help the students to stay motivated during the day and a snack to take home would help them sleep better at night. Due to the socio-economic levels in our school's area, food is an essential that many of our students go without. A little bit of food to fill their bellies could go a long way in helping them be successful.
