Still I Rise

My Students

At my school, to maintain focus on learning, we separate the boys and girls. I have been teaching fifth grade girls, reading, language arts and social studies the last four years at my present school. It has been the most rewarding experience of my teaching career. (Prior to this, I taught boys and girls in both fourth and fifth grade for 20 years.)

The learning and mind set of an all girls' classroom is completely different then a mixed gender class.

The girls speak freely, openly, and have a greater hunger for learning. There is no fear to learn, to be wrong, to try and try again. I have seen greater growth academically, emotionally and socially. There is greater bonding amongst the students, less rivalry, and more of a "let me help you" attitude amongst each other. Watching, and being a part of this on a daily basis, restores my faith in the future. These last four years, watching and working with these girls, has been a gift to me. They are beautiful, young women, beginning to make their mark in this world.

My Project

Our school is implementing the International Baccalaureate (IB) education into our primary grades for the 2017-2018 year. The program's rigorous international standards require the students to have daily access to computers in the classroom. An IB education requires "inquiry, action, and reflection. Students will use the Chromebooks to meet the needs of these rigorous standards by learning the Big6, "a process model of how people of all ages solve an information problem." This year my students will have the unique opportunity to develop peer relationships with students in Cambodia. ( A colleague is teaching in Cambodia this year) Students will be conversing via Chromebooks with the group of students in Cambodia, developing a relationship to share each other's cultures, studies, and dreams. In addition, using the Chromebooks, my students will research Cambodia's geographical features, culture, history ,language, the connection Cambodia has with the United States, and effects of the relationship. Students will complete the research project and share their findings via a presentation at our Multicultural Fair in December for parents and community members.

IB learning is global, in which we connect and learn about different languages and cultures.

Connecting and understanding the diversity around our world creates a greater acceptance of the cultures. Students who embrace diversity, learn about the similarities and differences of the people in our world, will become our peacemakers of the future.
