My Students
We have military families, special education students, gifted and talented students, English Language Learners, and students from a variety of cultures and religions. Many of my students are movers; they can't sit still. My students deserve every opportunity possible to succeed. They thrive on community interaction, positive reinforcement, and choices. They must have access to state of the art knowledge to prepare them for the careers of tomorrow, something not every student currently has.
One of the great things about having so many diverse students is the unique perspective they all bring to our conversations.
Our school community is comprised of students who can speak over 30 different languages, students who have lived outside of the US, students who have challenges we cannot imagine, and students who refuse to give up.
My Project
As we have continued to progress towards adding more flexible seating to our classroom such as these cafe-style tables, my students have been able to travel without bumping desks, thus without drawing attention to their desire to change their current learning needs. Our once cramped rows of standard student desks have begun to evolve into a more student-centered college cafe atmosphere where the students are able to choose which seating arrangement best suits there learning need. Moving not only seats but also easily shifting from individual learning to various collaborative groups as needed.
These seemingly small changes have enabled all of my students to picture more space than our walls four walls could ever provide; to envision themselves in a learning environment beyond high school.
