Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me. How untrue. Broken bones can easily mend. Hearts sometimes do not mend. These hearts that do not mend may become adults who bully. We all know at least one adult who bullies or who has road rage.
Like so many of us as children, my students do not have the negotiation skills to deal with the bullying they receive.
However, they also do not have the basic language skills they need that other children have. They attend an urban school that has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Their parents (or grandparents in some cases) try their best. Their limited financial resources make it difficult for them. My students are language delayed and also have other difficulties such as cognitive impairments, ADHD, medical problems due to lead exposure, learning disabilities and other medical problems. They are at risk for being bullied. They are also at risk for becoming bullies. All it takes for a child to be a bully is to say "Your mama" or other rote phrases that my students will pick up on. They may not even know what it means. They do know it is what other children say. They are easy targets for bullies because they look or talk differently. They may be the awkward one in class.
My Project
The book "Bullying in Schools" will be used to teach vocabulary skills, social skills and be used as a focus of discussion in small groups on bullying. My 3rd-5th grade students will enjoy this activity. There are podcasts in the iTunes store about bullying. Some titles are "Block a Bully", "Cyber-Safety", "Cyber-bullying" and "Bullying". These podcasts are about 3-5 minutes in length. Just the right length for my students. They will be able to discuss the podcasts in their groups. I will be able to target their language goals using these podcasts. I also have a set of books for K5 and 1st grade students. The series is "Dinofours". It is about a kindergarten class of Dinosaurs who deal with tough questions at that age. All of these books have bullying type themes and how to get along with your peers. I need a speaker system that will let me play the iPod Touch and my CD's for my students.
Bullying is not something that is new.
It has been around since man came to be. It seems to be an epidemic now. Rudeness/bullying is modeled on television shows and documented on news. Our society has lowered its standards for acceptable behavior. I am trying to teach my students the appropriate behavior/language skills when they are young. I want them to have the skills to act appropriately and to stand up for themselves if they are bullied. Will you help our society raise its standards?
