Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

While we all know the saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me," this phrase significantly underestimates the power of the written word. My students need to see how important it is to make their voices heard verbally but also through writing.

My school is located within a high poverty area of Manhattan.

Many of our students' parents are immigrants and are not proficient in the English language. Some parents are even unable to read or write. The one thing our whole community has in common, though, is a desire for our children to be the best they can be academically and emotionally. The students at our school are very perceptive. They have strong opinions about current events and relevant topics. They thrive in situations where their voices can be heard.

My Project

The materials requested will aid in helping our students' voices be heard through the written word. By having supplies that make the writing process hands-on and visually stimulating, it will help engage and excite our writers as they share their opinions. Rather than drafting and publishing on the same paper, students will clearly see the difference between a rough draft and a finalized published version. It will excite them to not only start new pieces but see them through to new paper! The folders will help our students differentiate the steps within the writing process as we gather ideas, draft, revise, and edit our writing. They'll be excited to complete one step to move their paper on to a new pocket of the folder. The binding machine will help visually excite our students as they can see their own ideas and opinions in the form of a book that we can put on the bookshelves in our own libraries!

These supplies will transform our classroom as our students feel less as if classwork is obligatory and more as if classwork is exciting and meaningful!

When students are excited to complete work, they spend more time on it and produce work to the best of their abilities. If students are able to perfect their writing, people around the world will be able to hear their opinions and voices much into the future!
