This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students of Jesse White Learning Academy were fortunate enough to get their educational needs in a fairly new facility. Our building resides in the heart of Hazel Crest, IL. with students coming from many different walks of life. These students come together in my classroom with the common goal and purpose of making and creating beautiful music together!
I teach students who are at the top of their class, who have been inducted into the National Junior Honer Society, as well as, those students who may struggle a bit for various reasons (i.e.
learning disability). When they step into the band room, they know they have come together for a common goal.
My Project
The students were in awe when they had the chance to see and hear a high school marching band and drum line! For most, it was their first time seeing such a spectacle.
In an effort to bring something new and different to our school district and to expose our budding musicians to as many musical experiences as possible, we will now offer our students the opportunity to be a part of an elite drum line experience.
The slings, sticks/mallets will be assigned to each student in order for them to carry and play their assigned percussion instrument. The leg rests are to help stabilize the snare drums while the students march and to protect their legs from injury. These items are important to ensure safety and the most effective way for students to be able to march and play.
Students will use this equipment and supplies for learning percussion techniques, rudiments and the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) marching percussion/drum line style. They will perform not only for their community, but also for other communities and in local competitions.
