Writing is hard and writing in a second language is even harder. My students come to me from diverse backgrounds and with various language repertoires. They have knowledge and experiences to share, but since they are just learning to write, they don't yet know that they are future authors.
Stickers will help motivate young second-language writers to put their pencils to paper.
Any effort to write in their journals will earn a sticker, positively reinforcing their writing and increasing their willingness to engage in future writing tasks.
I want to celebrate their writing based on effort, not proficiency. We all have to start somewhere and I want my students to know that if they're brave enough to make a start, then they'll be rewarded. The more they write, the better writers they'll become, and the sky will be the limit!
