This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high-poverty area in Virginia; my school is small, with about 350 children enrolled. The children in my building are great kids; they thrive off positive motivation and are very intuitive when focused. We were named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2006.
Currently, I am a Second grade teacher; I love teaching Second grade simply because kids are fun to teach at this level.
They are enthusiastic, happy to be at school, work together well, and they are the perfect mixture of independence and neediness in behavior and attitude!
They make me WANT to come to work :-)
My Project
My kids and I enjoy Science and History--mainly because I assign artsy-fartsy activities to demonstrate an understanding of the material I teach. At the moment, I am doing a History unit on ancient Egypt and China and a Science unit on life cycles of plants, frogs, chickens, and butteflies.
We have made pyramids, booklets, cartouches, Chinese lanterns, and King Tut masks, so far in History and frogs, plant cycle chains, and life cycle spinners in Science.
As one can imagine, we have used a bunch of supplies to complete everything. Within the past two weeks, my kids have gone through two packs of construction paper and 20 glue sticks--it is incredulous!
I am asking for packs of fresh glue sticks and a bulk pack of construction paper and card stock because it will come in handy as I continue teaching my units.
Because of the emphasis on Reading and Math, Science and Social Science/History does not get as much time or attention, so I have to make the time teaching both REALLY count!
Why not teach these concepts using arts 'n'crafts? The kids enjoy it and my goal is met--#winning
