My Project
Note: This is not an emergency need project, but mahalo for looking on! I teach at a Title I high school in a community of predominantly Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander families. Located in a historically under-resourced part of Oʻahu Island, Hawaiʻi, my school is currently under CSI-MRI status, and we are on an important campaign to improve relationships, reading levels, and test scores across campus. It's an incredibly stressful time for everyone, students included.
My school has decided to administer the Smarter Balanced Assessment Interim to all ELA classes in the next semester (odd for my 9th and 10th graders), so I'm seeking help to prepare my classroom and space to alleviate test anxiety and boost student self-efficacy during assessments.
I am seeking snacks for students who arrive late, often without breakfast, so they have fuel to sit through long intervals of practice and review. Stability balls, fidgets, and stress balls are additional focus strategies for my students who need to move while working through long texts. Some of my students expressed the want for desktop lamps- they'd like more lighting without impacting the entire room. To further support their request, included is shelf lighting so bookshelves alight when being browsed. We have issues with gum under our tables, so I'm seeking table trash bins, too.
While these items aren't penultimate to improving test scores, this project is important to me because I know what motivates my students, and they know themselves. When they voice a need, it's important that I respond to it- such as the extra lighting and flexible seating- because it's what they think's needed to do their best. In addition to the strategies I'll need to now teach them for test success and understanding prompts, these supplies reinforce my communication that I believe in them.
