As in all low-income communities following the Covid shut downs, my school is struggling to close the achievement gaps. Relationships matter now more than ever and NHIS teachers just don't have the funds to create the spaces and experiences we need to foster growth mindsets and better attitudes toward learning in our students. Teaching at NHIS is sacred work to me: this is my community and alma mater. I was born and raised along this coast and understand how small gestures of kindness and nurturing go a long way for the youth. Donʻt sleep on these kids from Nānākuli Valley- they're far more resilient and compassionate than most give them the chance to show. Their intelligence is in the ocean, land, and practices that have been shared for generations in their families. As kanaka ʻōiwi (native Hawaiian), I'm committed to teaching language arts and English from a multicultural approach to honor their interconnectedness.
