Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We may be biased - but we believe we have the best kids around! Our school serves about 500 Kindergarten through 5th grade students. This year our district launched a massive redistricting plan that significantly impacted our K-3rd grade students. Over 90% of our K-3 students either are now zoned for a different school or are new to our school this year.
It would be easy to look at this change as a challenge, but instead our team has launched several efforts and collaborative activities to build community with our new families and students.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a school in a neighboring district and I saw one of these sticker charts. As students arrived in the morning, transitioned during the day, or families visited the school, they were encouraged to pause and place a few stickers on the picture. It would take several weeks to complete the entire picture and see what the image was (in this case a butterfly), but the messaging around the activity was that we can work together as a team to make something beautiful.
Along with our other community building activities, I love the idea of all students in any grade and any family, no matter their first language (we have families who speak more than 10 languages!), can participate in something together. We are incredibly grateful to our community that believes that a strong early education has the power to change a student's life.
