My Students

Healthy habits can begin by repeatedly making healthy choices. Our students will learn about the benefits of an active lifestyle and will track their own recess activity with individual pedometers.

We are lucky to have a PE coach and a handful of dedicated parents who make our students aware of healthy choices with a fantastic school-wide running club and with a tremendously bountiful school garden.

Our school's handbook asks parents not to send cupcakes for birthday celebrations but to consider, instead, fruits and vegetables or non-edible items. While some are resisting this change, most people at our school have embraced it wholeheartedly. Each spring, the second grade does an in-depth Healthy Choices unit of study. This year, we would like to provide each student with a pedometer. We will track recess time activity as well as estimate and predict how many steps we will take when we walk to our next field trip, rather than take a school bus.

My Project

Last year, we were grateful to have a handful of pedometers donated to us. Students wore them to recess and had fun tracking their steps. Friendly competitions were encouraged to see who could move the most. Then a few students were selected to wear them while we walked around the zoo on a field trip. They were shocked at the number of steps they accrued when they were able to walk around all day long, not just during recess. The pedometers were powerful tools -- they raised physical fitness awareness and they provided data for math lessons. Our goal for this year's students is to allow everyone the chance to record his/her steps and make individual (rather than team) goals for improving activity levels.

We have noticed that when our students become enthusiastic about a unit of study, they share that enthusiasm and their knowledge with their families.

We hope to get our students excited about moving so they can start pushing for more "active" activities at home. Students who understand healthy choices now have a better chance of developing healthy habits for life.
