Stepping Up To STEM In Kindergarten: Hands On Center Materials!

My Students

The kindergarten students in my class are inquisitive, energetic, and hardworking scholars. My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions. It's my goal to create an engaging, positive, and organized classroom environment that helps all students to thrive.

I teach math, science, reading, and social studies at a Title I school in Arlington, Virginia.

In our classroom we incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, project based learning, and flexible seating to ensure each student's needs are met!

My students are active learners, they are scientists, problem solvers, explorers, and creators. I am so lucky to be teaching this amazing group of students!

My Project

The materials in this project are differentiated tools that will help meet the needs of all of my students. Every student is unique, and they deserve to have learning materials that fit that unique learning style. Integrating math games and STEM centers helps to captivate students attention and spark their interest for the STEM fields. During small groups it is important that groups are engaged and working with materials that are best fit to their learning style. Without an organized small group and centers routine, students can become distracted, thus decreasing their learning. These materials will help scholars learn more effectively and introduce choice into our math routine.

It is important to provide students with activities where they can learn in various ways, whether it is auditory, visual, or kinesthetic, and the STEM materials in this project will allow just that!

In order to fully understand and engage in the lesson, my students need engaging materials such as the Butterfly Counting and sorting bears. Visual learners will be able to have fun while they sort beads and pom poms by color. Addition and subtraction is introduced for the first time at the beginning of Kindergarten, and these math center materials will provide my students with a resource for practicing and quizzing their peers on math facts and fluency.

These tools will truly impact students' understanding and excitement for learning math. Incorporating the STEM centers into both whole and small group lessons on a daily basis will deepen students' mathematical understanding and build student independence within the classroom.
