My Students
What motivates an active, healthy lifestyle as an adult? Many times it's the learning and the way you felt about it as a child that affects us as adults.
In a public school setting, my students are a welcome mix of abilities, backgrounds, and family support at home.
With a 90% minority population and 40% speaking a second language at home, some of my students are still adapting their dialect to public speaking. They are eager students, always ready to present, and are willing to break out with given time. Flexible grouping allows them to communicate through different learning styles and personalities. With a positive affect, my students are engaged and enjoy working with one another.
My Project
Encouraged by the "Kids Run the OC" that awards students who run 26.2 miles, the equivalent of a marathon, throughout the year, my students would like to start their own running program in the classroom.
Healthy learning as a child leads to healthy choices as an adult.
The use of pedometers is the first "step" in promoting a healthy lifestyle, while being able to use the data for various projects. With the multiple data inputs, my students will be able to take them for use at home and different periods will have the opportunity to compete against one another.
As we step to the healthy side, our pedometers will initially be used as a way to track step progress towards our 10,000 a day step and 26.2 mile goals. Additionally, they'll be used for data as we calculate statistical data such as mean, median, and mode. Scale drawings will be brought to an enormous scale as we'll be able to use steps instead of inches.
